WASHINGTON, UT — One driver died Friday morning after a four-vehicle crash on state Route 59 in Washington County sent several people to the hospital. The wreck happened near milepost 14, a few miles southeast of Hurricane City, and involved three vehicles and a motorcycle.
Crash and Injuries
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Cameron Roden said emergency crews found one driver with critical injuries and flew that person to St. George Regional Hospital. A second driver was trapped in a vehicle and had to be extricated before being taken by ambulance.
Two other drivers were also transported to St. George Regional Hospital by ambulance. Roden said one of the injured drivers later died at the hospital.
How It Unfolded
Preliminary findings suggest the crash began when a driver heading east tried to make an improper pass. Roden said that maneuver set off the collision involving the other vehicles and the motorcycle.
Troopers said they are still working to determine the exact sequence of events. Additional details are expected once the scene is fully cleared.
Road Closures
The eastbound side of SR-59 was temporarily shut down while crews treated the injured and removed debris from the roadway. Traffic was diverted to the westbound lane during the response.
Reconstruction work kept lanes closed while investigators documented the scene and examined how the crash happened.
Agencies On Scene
The Utah Highway Patrol is leading the investigation. Assisting agencies included the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Hurricane Valley Fire District, Apple Valley Fire Department, Hildale-Colorado City Fire Department and Intermountain Health Flight & Ambulance Services.
Investigation Continues
An accident reconstruction team responded as part of standard protocol for a fatal crash. Officials said the report is based on information from first responders and may not include the full scope of findings.
This remains a developing investigation as troopers work to confirm what led to the collision.
