LAKEWOOD, CO — Colorado State Patrol troopers arrested an off-duty Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy Sunday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence after deputies responded to a report of a person asleep at the wheel.
The stop happened at an apartment complex near West Hampden Avenue Service South and South Harlan Street, where local deputies were called before asking the state patrol to handle the investigation.
Why Troopers Took Over
Jeffco deputies said they requested help because law enforcement agencies generally do not investigate alleged crimes involving their own employees. That left the case to state troopers, who made the arrest at about 8:05 a.m.
The deputy identified in the report is Tyler Stahl, according to the sheriff’s office.
Sheriff’s Office Response
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said Stahl was released to a family member after the arrest. He is now on paid administrative leave while the state patrol continues its investigation.
The office said it will conduct its own internal review after the outside investigation ends.
What Happens Next
Once the Colorado State Patrol finishes its work, the sheriff’s office said it will decide on any next steps based on the findings. The agency said it will take “appropriate action” depending on what investigators determine.
No additional details about the condition of the driver or any testing results were included in the initial report.
Case Remains Open
Officials described the matter as a developing story, and the account may change as more information becomes available. For now, the arrest is being handled as an active DUI investigation by state authorities.
The sheriff’s office has not announced a timeline for its internal review.
Public Safety Reminder
The incident began with a report of someone asleep behind the wheel, a situation that can prompt an immediate welfare check and a possible DUI inquiry. In this case, that call led to an arrest, a handoff to state investigators, and an administrative leave decision by the deputy’s employer.
Authorities have not released further details about the vehicle or the circumstances before the arrest.
